Tips for Getting to the Next Level

At this level, you are gaining confidence in participating in a variety of missionary tasks as well as conversations on a broader range of topics. Focus on filling in the details, sharing simple experiences and teaching gospel principles. With diligent study and practice, you will be able to paint a picture with your words. Read extensively in your mission language to discover a broad range of vocabulary.

Activities

  • Learn and Practice Vocabulary
    • Focus on learning vocabulary that will add detail to what you teach. For example, learn words and phrases that will help someone feel like they are present in the Sacred Grove with Joseph Smith.
    • Learn transition words to help your sentences flow. These are words that connect thoughts (e.g., however, furthermore, and, but, because, since, etc).
  • Practice Speaking/Listening
    • Regularly have someone listen to you or record yourself relating different missionary topics or scripture stories. Ask for feedback on where you are lacking detail, then work on intentionally giving more information.
    • Ask someone to relate their conversion story to you. While listening, write down important details, then relate the story to another missionary.
    • After writing in your journal for the day, record a video or a voice memo in your mission language that recounts what happened during your day.
    • At the end of visits with the people you teach, recap what was taught and what everyone decided to do before the next visit.
  • Practice Reading/Writing
    • Read for about 30 minutes each day in your mission language. Alternate between a focus on the scriptures and more conversational gospel language (e.g. conference talks).
    • Before teaching a gospel principle, read about it in your language study.
    • Write a short story each week about a spiritual experience you had. After writing it once, ask an advanced speaker to correct it and provide feedback on how much detail you used. Rewrite it using more detail and transition words.
    • Translate gospel principles found in Preach My Gospel chapter 3 from your native language into your mission language. Compare your translation to the one that the church made. Notice differences, similarities, and errors.
  • Seek and Develop the Gift of Tongues
    • In your mission language, record a few stories that relate how Heavenly Father has blessed the people you work with to understand the message. Add detail to how He has prepared you to use your mission language and how He has helped others understand by the Spirit.
