Tips for Getting to the Next Level

Focus on increasing your vocabulary on a variety of issues to help you defend your opinions, hypothesize solutions to problems, and speak abstractly (e.g. talking about how two or more issues relate to each other and what the implications are). Read as much as time allows on multifaceted issues. Be an active participant in presenting and defending solutions to problems found in your community, the church, or your mission.

Activities

  • Learn and Practice Vocabulary:
    • Re-read challenging passages to learn more words from context. Look up words only when they are important to understanding the meaning of the text.
    • Focus on learning vocabulary that will help you sound more educated. Think of some common words that you use and find synonyms for them.
  • Practice Speaking/Listening:
    • Be an active participant in presenting and defending solutions to problems found in your community, the church, or your mission.
    • Identify an educated member of the church that stays current on church events, then set up weekly conversations to share, defend, and hypothesize opinions on the current issues of the church and local community.
    • Listen and re-listen to broadcasts by area authorities and discuss the implications of their instruction / announcements with your companion or a native member.
    • If you are no longer a missionary, watch/listen to the news on targeted issues.
  • Practice Reading/Writing:
    • Regularly outline a structured argument about an issue related to the church. Define the issue, look at both sides, find evidence to support each side, state your opinion, and defend it. Draft a conclusion that includes your opinion, a list of pros and cons, and how this topic relates to other topics. Ask a native speaker to read it and correct the writing errors you are still making and then discuss the topic together.
    • Each day, read either a general conference talk on an important issue or an article from the church newsroom. Highlight the important issues in the text and summarize in writing how that particular issue is affecting church membership.
    • Each month, write a summary of the different sides of current issues and how they could be solved. Focus on using linking words to connect your paragraphs.
  • Seek and Develop the Gift of Tongues:
    • >Record a voice memo or video message for other missionaries on the following question: How does Heavenly Father’s manifestation of spiritual gifts play an important role in fulfilling his divine purpose?
